The 2009 Metropolitan Championship at Miami Valley Golf Club

There are a few golf clubs in America that have a more decorated past than the Miami Valley Golf Club. These clubs are called such names as Merion, Inverness, Oakmont, Oakland Hills and Augusta National. Miami Valley Golf Club's illustrious history began in 1919 with a golf course designed by the incomparable Donald Ross. In 1931, Miami Valley hosted the world's best in the Western Open. 26 years later in 1957, Miami Valley had the honor of hosting the last PGA Championship ever to be contested at Match Play.

These achievements are not all for Miami Valley though, the club has been host to many titans of the game through exhibitions that were played on the grounds. Bobby Jones, Babe Didrikson Zaharias, Sam Snead, Tommy Armour and Lord Byron Nelson have all played the eighteen holes that Ross laid out at Miami Valley Golf Club. Adding further to its steadfast support of the game of golf, Miami Valley Golf Club has hosted four Ohio Opens, two Ohio Senior Amateurs and an Ohio Mid-Amateur. The course has also played host to the Ohio's best amateurs in the Ohio Amateur five times and fittingly was the home club of 5-time Ohio Amateur Champion Bob Servis.

This summer, around 100 of the Dayton Metropolitan area's best golfers will try and stop Pete Samborsky from writing his own piece of history. Samborsky will be attempting to win the Metropolitan Championship for a record fourth straight time in 2009.
