Brora Golf Week Brora Golf Week

Over the last 27 years, Brora Golf Week has built its reputation as one of the Highland's premier golfing events.

Brora, the most northerly golf memorial to James Braid in his native Scotland, is the venue for the event which includes:

* five days of team and individual golf competitions;

* tuition from our two PGA professionals; and

* six nights of entertainment with a Highland theme.

It's a great way to start your 2008 golfing season and exceptional value for money.

I look forward to seeing you in Brora in May.

Roy Wood
Secretary
Brora Golf Week

The Course

Gleneagles may be more glamorous, Carnoustie more prestigious. It is Brora which is the most northerly golf memorial to James Braid in his native Scotland.

Brora is also the headquarters of the James Braid Golfing Society, and while its President, Peter Thomson, and fellow member Ronan Rafferty annually enthuse, the club golfer, the bedrock of the game, will derive equal pleasure and satisfaction from Brora's 6110 yards.

Given 194 acres of Scottish links land to work on, what in 1923 was entitled "Braid's Plan" is hardly altered. Here the visitor will enjoy the mixture of bent grass and beach sand, burn water and gorse in glorious yellow May bloom. There is even a railway which comes into play from the tenth tee.

With the exception of the short sixth, the outward nine holes follow the contour of Kintradwell Bay in the foreground, with a backdrop of the Sutherland foothills from Ben Bhraggie to the west, away to the Ord of Caithness in the north-east.

The inward nine holes follow the fence line of the bordering croft land, with out of bounds to concentrate the mind. Of the two short holes, the delightful 13th, Snake, winds back towards the sea, whilst the 18th contains all the concerns of protecting a score against a bunkered green a two hundred yard carry away and under the scrutiny of the clubhouse windows.

Social Events

A small group of members strive to ensure that the club always provides a warm welcome, good food and service in comfortable surroundings.

The House and Social Committee is chaired by Vice President, Alistair Risk, and includes Angela Metcalfe, Angela Macbeath and Angela Grant. (It is a foul slur to suggest that Christian names have any influence).

Our President Robert Powell Secretary Tony Gill and Club Caterer Alistair Norrie are also ex-officio members of this committee.

The Entertainment Programme

Brora Golf Club is proud of its tradition of being at the heart of the village community and of its welcome to visiting golfers and their families.

To encourage members, their friends and holiday-makers to get the most out of their "Brora experience" a superb programme of entertainment - dances, concerts, quizes and much more - is run throughout the year.

Highlights have or will include:

- the Hogmanay Dance with top Scottish Entertainer Ronnie Ross

- the annual Burns Supper, with Billy Anderson and Malcolm McLeod

- the St Valantine's Supper Dance with Paula MacAskill

- the Golf Week socials and the Clynlish Week events

plus dances every bank holiday weekend from Easter onwards.

Members and visitors are recommended to book up for these events early to ensure that they can enjoy the best entertainment the north has to offer.
